It is a program that was started 19 years ago by Dr Howard Jeffery Weinstein the chief of pediatric hematology and oncology at the hospital It works by pairing runners with a child undergoing treatment at the clinic The runner then completes the marathon in the childs honor
Not only does Weinstein lead the team he has participated every year Now for his 25th raceand what he says is his lasthes paired with a remarkable patient As first reported by CBS Boston his partner is Harry Burns a 5-year-old from Marblehead Massachusetts who loves Spiderman Reggae music and the beach  He also has Down syndrome and is battling acute lymphoblastic leukemia Despite his challenges he is known by his family and physicians to have an infectious positive attitude even while he is at the clinic receiving treatment
Harry amazes Weinstein "He comes to the clinic and immediately starts playing and running around" he said "Youd never know he was sick Hes really such an engaging little guy"

"Each year I get more excited about helping to put the team together" Weinstein said "Our patient-partner program is a unique way to honor the courage and strength of our patients who are receiving cancer therapy Thinking about their journey gives me the inspiration and drive to finish the marathon with a big smile"
This year 45 patients are paired with runners for the race A child psychologist and a child life specialist carefully match pairs to ensure that the runner and patient hit it off On race day patients cheer for their runner at a party at mile 20 which happens to be Weinsteins house
The children and runners have become so close in years past that they have remained friends after the marathon For Harry that seems inevitable
"I dont know what it is about Harry but he makes friends wherever he goes" said his father Bryan Burns "When he goes to the clinic he runs down the hall and knocks on all the doors to say hello"
Though Harry does not fully understand that Weinstein is running in his honor his father says he loves the attention he receives from his new friend Harry has even written the doctor a short poem: Roses are red Violets are blue thank you for honoring me by running 262
"Weinstein is the guy that is making it all happen which is remarkable" Burns said The father of three also praises MassGeneral for the feeling of family the hospital promotes "Nobody is a number" he said "They know my wife and me and my entire family"
On the Sunday evening before the race the MassGeneral team and patients have a special pasta dinner and each runner gives their partner a Boston Marathon medal The children wear their gifts during the race and then for several weeks after
"I think kids see [running] as a wonderful free-spirited activity and I think that translates to what we are trying to do when were treating kids with serious chronic illness" Weinstein said "We want them to try to forget as much as they can about their illness"
He also wants the program to help the children build lasting relationships and foster hope
"I think the running community is emblematic of that" he said   Tags: General InterestNewswireFeatured Content train with consistency, blue white air force ones,How to Qualify for the Boston Marathon Coach Jenny Hadfield says the key to qualifying for the Boston Marathon is to develop a plan You'll also see the Colonial-era Old Dutch Church and the Sleepy Hollow Cemeterythe final resting place for famous locals as well as luminaries including Andrew Carnegie and William Rockefeller.
