Mountain Weekly News ~ Each year National Geographic recognizes individuals from around the world for their extraordinary achievements in “exploration adventure sports conservation or humanitarianism” These global figures are nominated for the Adventurer of the Year award Among those highlighted in this years issue are a group of female Afghan cyclists who are the first of their kind to compete internationally Tommy Caldwell and Kevin Jorgeson for the first free ascent of the Dawn Wall in Yosemite Valley and Pasang Lhamu Sherpa Akita for her feats in mountaineering and recovery efforts after the earthquake in her home country of Nepal More information on the nominees can be found here I had the opportunity to get to know Pasang Lhamu Akita Sherpa while working together last summer in the North Cascades A female pioneer in the male-dominated world of mountaineering Pasang is an inspiration both on and off the mountain While coordinating a successful expedition to Aconcagua this past month–the highest peak in South America–she was able to share some information about her story The 78 magnitude earthquake in Nepal last spring brought loss of life (8800+ fatalities) and sacred places to Nepal a country host to some of the world’s most impressive landscape Much of the destruction was a result of avalanches and landslides in the Khumbu Valley of Mount Everest After evading the fatal landslide that swept through Everest base camp the day of the earthquake Pasang walked over from a nearby town where she was finishing up an expedition of another Himalayan peak to support the survivors In her immediate efforts to support those affected on the nearby slopes of Everest she traveled and worked through multiple aftershocks Powered by the fearless courage of a female mountaineer she marched into the storm to offer help She entered into remote villages still at risk of destruction from post earthquake seismic activity These special mountain towns needed the most help due to the destruction of infrastructure which isolated these places form relief efforts For weeks Nepal experienced over 240 aftershocks that hindered many recovery efforts and increased the issue of homelessness due to destruction of property because many people whose homes remained standing were scared to re-enter them She considered her survival of the event a gift and chose to spread it by risking her life to help others Pasang received support from her global network of friends and colleagues which she has developed from her international guiding career She tracked the support and the designation of monetary donations through images and text postings on Facebook Pasang’s biography on the National Geographic website details an example of her effective and pragmatic approach to relief efforts They note a particularly effective and instrumental strategy that was coordinated by Pasang and fello
